This seems to be a good, low maintenance way to make compost & control the manure from the chickens. I’m planning on using this method. The compost will be excellent for the garden, and I really like the idea of not having to clean their coop out all the time. Less work, better results! How can you go wrong with that program?
Here’s something I learned from “Merry Patriot” today. I had no idea! This can make bulk food storage cheaper for a lot of people. Thanks Merry!
If you are not storing up food for emergencies, then get busy! The grocery stores don’t always have food. Just ask the people who lived through the hurricanes, or anyone who couldn’t get food in Washington DC last winter when they had their big snow storm. Stuff happens. Be prepared. Don’t be one of the idiot sheeple waiting helplessly for the government to come save them!
Hello all -- I’m trying to get caught up on emails, & other chores. I have to work tonight, then I’m off for a few more days. Weather permitting, we’re going to plant some stuff in the garden tomorrow, & work on getting that chicken coop built. I’ve been exercising quite a bit, & I’m sore as hell!
I’m working on a list of links to survival/self-sufficiency related websites. If you have any suggestions, please email me & let me know. I’m planning on dividing it up into blogs, forums, supplies, etc.
I don’t have much time right now, but here’s a video for something that might come in handy for you someday. Remember -- BE PREPARED! Survival is not a kit or gear. It’s knowledge & a mindset. Prepare ahead of time & decide to survive, it doesn’t happen by accident!
Hey guys, I’m on the 3rd of 4 12 hour shifts in a row. I have to work tomorrow & then have 3 off. I’m going to be putting some stuff in the garden this week. Rob & his family will be over to help, as well as Verrick (one of the docs I work with) and his family. We’re all planning on having a pretty big garden & canning a lot of food this year. We’re also going to be working on that chicken tractor this weekend. I’m going to try to post a video & maybe have some plans posted on here as well. Let me know how your gardening plans are going. Anyone else raising chickens?
I have been slacking on adding the rest of those survival gardening videos, so here’s the next one. He brings up some good points in this video, like return on your investment of time, labor & space in your garden. Last year, we wasted a bunch of space, water, time & work trying to grow some corn. We got 0 return on that. Just as the corn was about to get big enough to eat, the local deer decided to visit the garden. Wiped it all out at once. Not that we would have gotten a ton anyway, but it made me mad. Not only did they eat all the corn, but trashed several of our tomato plants in the process.
So, corn isn’t really high on my list of priorities this year. We’re going to try to grow some potatoes again. We’ll have lots of tomatoes, peppers, onions, green beans, cucumbers…and I don’t know what else. We’ll see what happens after that. I plan on canning a lot of tomatoes, salsa & pickles this year. I ran out of my killer bread & butter jalapenos way too early last year!
Apparently the transition over to the Linux server went without a hitch. I don’t think the site was down at all. Everything seems to be working fine. If you find any broken links, or something that’s not working, please let me know.
I was looking over some of the stats on my visitors, and I see that people have been coming to the website from literally all over the world. Please send me an email, or leave a comment on the blog, and let me know you were here.
Well, I have been thinking about the blog a lot lately, and I’m going to change what I have been adding recently. My original intent was for it to be about survival/self-sufficiency/homesteading type subjects. I kind of got off track, and put too much emphasis on political issues. I’m going to go back to the original idea.
I have a tendency to go overboard with things, and I have been paying too much attention to political crap, and neglecting other areas of my life. I have been reading a lot lately on areas that I have been ignoring. Physical fitness, financial fitness, etc. I want to be a well balanced person – whatever that is!
I haven’t been getting as much feedback lately, so I’d like to hear what kind of subjects other people will like to see. Please send me some feedback, either by commenting here on the blog, or feel free to send me an email. mike@mikemarlow.com
As for me, I am pretty excited about my new (to me) Gravely tractor, and getting the garden going. I am working the next 4 nights, then hopefully I’ll be able to get some stuff planted in the garden. we’re still hammering out what we’re going to grow. Our little chickens are growing FAST & I think we’re going to build their coop next weekend. I’ll have pictures at least, and possibly a video.
I have recently begun a workout program called P90X, and it is BRUTAL! I’m so out of shape…I can’t believe it. I’ll get there though. If you are considering a workout program, I think P90X is one of the best I’ve seen, but if you haven’t been doing much lately, you might want to ramp up your activity level for a few weeks before you begin it. It’s no joke!
If you’ve never listened to “Today’s Survival Show” podcast with Bob Mayne, I recommend it highly. Listening to that has been one of the things that has motivated me to make some overdue changes in my life. Bob brings a refreshingly balanced approach to survival, and how you should integrate it into all aspects of your life. I have downloaded every one of his podcasts, and listen to them (and others) while I’m driving instead of music, or garbage news.
Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for now. PLEASE – let me know what types of info would be helpful to you in your quest for self-sufficiency. The reason I have this blog is to help others, as well as to learn more stuff myself. If you have an area of expertise that you’d like to add to help others, then let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.
I have started to add a post several times, but I keep getting interrupted, so I trashed it all & started over. I’ve been busy with a lot of different things. I got the Gravely running, and got most of the garden spot plowed up last night. My neighbor Joe, who I bought the tracor & plow from came over and helped me plow. I made a short little video clip of it (& him) in action.
My first attempt at putting a video on Youtube. I just shot that real quick with my phone while we were working. I plan on making more videos later.
The chickens are growing FAST! they are pretty easy to take care of so far. My wife is kinda liking them I think. She wasn’t too excited about getting more animals. Don’t get me wrong, she LOVES animals, she just isn’t a farm girl….YET! She does put up with me & my desire to turn our little hunk of dirt into a mini-farm. Sometimes she rolls her beautiful eyes & thinks I’m retarded, But -- she loves me for some reason & we always work out some sort of happy medium.
I just added a link to ae911truth.org. Be sure to check out their site. This is a fairly large group of engineers and architects that are questioning the official reports from our government as to what caused the collapse of the buildings on 911. Whatever your political views, if you look at the evidence that these people have, I think you will have to admit that there are some questions that need to be answered. Those who believe that there was some type of coverup, or even that our government was involved, are mocked & called “truthers.” I find it incredible that truth is used in a negative way like that. That if you are a person who wants truth, you’re bad for some reason.
The left wing liberals & the media automatically paint everyone who questions our government about anything as “conspiracy theory nuts.” I think anyone who accepts whatever is crammed down their throats by the media & the government without asking questions is a nut!
Here is a video on the same topic that has some pretty interesting information in it. There is enough there to cause reasonable doubt as to whether we were told the truth, or sold a bunch of lies. The video is over an hour long, but well worth watching.
Hello Everyone,
I’m just taking a break for a few minutes, so I thought i’d make a quick post. I’ve been outside doing some yardwork, and it AWESOME! 61 degrees out! I’ve been out in the sun working in a t-shirt & I am SO glad the cold is gone!
Since my last post, we got a gravely tractor with a rotary plow, and I’ll be getting more implements soon. I’m getting a cultivator, brush hog, and a snow blower for it, and may buy more from him. I’ll come back and edit this & add some pics of it later.
We also got some chickens. We got 3, and my buddy Rob got 3 (but he’s keeping them here). Ours are Black Australorps, and his are Rhode Island Reds. I’ll add pics of them later too. We’re planning on building a “chicken tractor” for them this weekend. I’m going to try to make a video of the process, but I’ve never done that before, so we’ll see how that goes.
Ok, back to work. I’ll add more later. I hope it’s as beautiful wherever you are as it is here!
I haven’t added any posts for awhile. I’ve kind of been in a funk the last few days. I am pretty pissed off about this health care bill. But – I figured that today, it’s time to get over it & get back to work on the blog.
I’d like to recommend a podcast to you that I have been listening to lately. Today’s Survival Show is is survival/preparedness oriented podcast that’s put on by a guy named Bob Mayne. Bob is a pretty down to earth guy. He talks about a lot of different subjects relating to survival in today’s world without the “extremist” mentality that you get from a lot of people. He gives real life examples of how he incorporates a survival mentality into everyday life, and gives different ideas of things you can do as well.
I like the fact that he doesn’t have the attitude “I’m the expert – either you agree with me, or you’re an idiot.” I’ve seen that in other people, and it turns me off & I won’t listen long. Even if someone is an expert on a particular subject, no one knows everything. Bob projects more of an attitude, of “Here’s what I do, and here’s why. Here are some alternatives. If you disagree, please go to the forum and tell us why.” He encourages people to join and participate in the forum, even if they disagree with his views.
I agree with a lot of his ideas, and his concept that survival and preparedness aren’t something that you do. It’s who you are. It’s a way of life, a way of thinking & it affects many different areas. It is not 10 cases of MRE’s in your basement & as many guns and ammo as you can afford. I believe that balance is the key to preparedness, as in everything in life. I struggle with this. I tend to get “tunnel vision,” and focus on something & ignore other important things. I’m trying to get better!
Here’s a pic of Bob from his site. Notice that he has no tin-foil hat!

Please let Bob know that you heard about him here!
Here is a link to “Light’s Out,” the best survival fiction I’ve read. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It’s a free e-book. Please come back here and leave a comment after reading it!
Register to vote if you’re not already. Find some good candidates that you believe in that will restore America to the republic that it was designed to be. Get these socialist assholes out of Washington. This is just the beginning. They’re going to take more and more. Let’s stop it now!
“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. … God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion; what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.” — Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, 1787
This is an EXCELLENT documentary about the truth of Islam, & what it teaches. If you are unaware of the dangers of Islam to our nation & the rest of the free world, you need to see this movie. Well worth the cost, I think everyone should have a copy & after they watch it, pass it on to friends and family.
Islam is the biggest threat to the free world, and our “leaders” and the liberal media try to white-wash it & pass it off as a religion of peace. Nothing could be further from the truth. Islam is a violent religion that has one goal, and that is complete world domination.
I just got through watching this, and I’m going to order more copies to give to people.
Here is the product decription from Amazon:
“An examination of Islam, violence, and the fate of the non-Muslim world.
Virtually every major Western leader has over the past several years expressed the view that Islam is a peaceful religion and that those who commit violence in its name are fanatics who misinterpret its tenets. This claim, while widely circulated, rarely attracts serious public examination. Now, the question is finally being asked, “Is Islam itself violent?”
Through an examination of the Koran, other Islamic texts, and the example of the prophet Muhammad, this documentary establishes, through a sober and methodical presentation, that violence against non-Muslims is and has always been an integral aspect of Islam. “Jihad,” while best translated as “struggle,” as represented in the Koran and the life of Muhammad, means nothing less than organized warfare against unbelievers. Relying primarily on Islam’s own sources, this documentary demonstrates that Islam is a violent, expansionary ideology that seeks the destruction or subjugation of other faiths, cultures, and systems of government.
The documentary consists of original interviews, citations from Islamic texts, Islamic artwork, computer-animated maps, footage of Western leaders, and Islamic television broadcasts. Its tone is sober, methodical, and compelling.
Features interviews with noted experts on Islam including Robert Spencer, Serge Trifkovic, Bat Ye’or, Abdullah Al-Araby, and former terrorist Walid Shoebat.”
This is the first video in a series that the folks at survival report have put on YouTube. If you’ve never had a garden before, you might want to practice now, in case of hard times later. There’s a lot more to it than some people think. We’re getting ready to start planting again. we learned a lot last year, but we still have a lot to learn. I’ll be adding more of these videos soon, as well as sharing our experiences this summer.
